On Freedom

How great is the Fourth of July? Even Big Guy is willing to utter the word "Freedom" more than once in a speech if I tell him to! Thank you to all who keep us free. And let's not forget why we celebrate:


IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences
For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:
For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.
We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do.     Funny the OAS is going to THROW out Honduras...because Honduras' congress REJECTS a dictator...

    HOWEVER the same OAS is going to admit Cuba!!!

    Cuba is a military runned dictatorship deserving the OAS' support...and Honduras doesn't?

    Echoing the above sentiments, yes, indeed, B. Hussein O. "whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people."

    And here we thought B.O.'s only mentors were Machiavelli and Saul Alinsky. Add King George III of Great Britain to the list.

    I got tears in my eyes at the end, too.

    There is, despite all B.O.'s and his thugs' and their Marxist compatriots in Congress' diabolical schemes to take down America, reason for genuine hope. There is God. And, so, I will joyfully celebrate Independence Day with the peaceful heart that comes from "... a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence."

  11. TOTUS, may I respectfully suggest that you put up those words in place of BO's next speech. I don't know that he remembers much of it, and I am pretty sure that Congress has either forgotten it, or never knew its outline in the first place.

A process will be set up where an inspector will come to your home to see if it is “energy efficient” and prepare an analysis of what you need to do to retrofit your home to make it meet the new regs. “Federally approved” companies will be contracted to do the work. (Wonder how many of these companies will have "connections" to members of Congress?)

    Remember back last July 2. 2008, when BHO advocated the creation of a ‘civilian national security force’. Here is what he said:

    "We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

    Well, the first step toward that goal is already in the works. Rep. Bob Filner, a California Democrat, introduced H.R. 675 back in January:

    Also, of MUCH greater importance - NO ONE registered for my site. Not Jamie, not Mountain Mama - none of the people who basically monopolize the comment section of the TOTUS blogspot as their own, sad little "mini blog"... going on and on and on about crap no one else cares about.

    But most notably, Jeff Foxworthy, aka TOTUS, also did NOT sign up for my site. Which means I did not reach my goal of a million new registrants in the past 24 hours, resulting in Google NOT offering me MILLIONS of dollars for my site - forcing me to continue to work for a living.

    Don't discount the ability of the American people to elect almost anyone as president. We are a very creative people. And Dan Quayle was a vice presidential candidate, who was the only candidate who had been certified sane in that election.

    If she was no threat to them, they would ignore her.

    By constantaly attacking her (and 90% of those attacks/accusations are unfounded or false), they're trying to destroy her.

    Why?

    She's one against many; that in itself is unAmerican -- but we already know that the Democrats/Progressives/Liberals are anti-American, so they're probably unAmerican as well.

    If the Republican Party attacked an Democrat Governor like Palin was (and still is) attacked, what do you think would happen?

    Yeah, there would be no Democrat governors -- 'cuase they ARE guilty of being crooks.

    I hope she wins whatever office she choses to run for; Franken has already made a mockery of the word "Sentator", and Pelosi/Frank have denigrated the word 'Representative" long ago; The Fraud has shredded and destroyed the noble ilmage of "President".

    There's lots of repair work to be done, and Palen is a great start.

    There is truth in this statement, but only because she is a real person, and living in times where the media wields power to destroy. The fact that most Americans watch teevee all the time rather than join life is the media's weapon. They wish to disuade the public from an image of Sarah Palin as an effective governor, a true American, by causing people like yourslef to believe she is a caricature - something not worthy of taking seriously.

    If, however, the kingmakers got behind this woman and promoted her, you would think differently because they would persuade you to like her and see her in a good light.

    As they did Obama. Let's wake up to this: white guilt elected him. Nothing more. He is a moron. He is a thug. He is an egomaniac. But he's the black guy. He is a black man in the office of president who breaks the law and gets away with it because the media doesn't speak up against the black guy. That would be racism. They have created the World's Greatest Negro by telling us that we just love him. It's a cop out, and he is getting away with murder.

    There will be scandal after scandal, unlike anything we have ever seen, and the media will cover it up for him, because he is black.

    Sarah is a woman. They attack her womanhood, her motherhood, her religion, her American life. The media is evil, and there is no other way to describe it.

  32. very astute analysis, bettyann. Very TRUTHFUL. We all know that the only reason McCain ended up with the nomination was because it was "his turn" in the good old boy political network. I, for one, don't think it was just coincidence that Thompson inserted himself into the campaign when he did. And I don't think Huckleberry stayed in as long as he did because he thought he had a chance of winning. Their presence drew Conservative votes away from VIABLE Conservative candidates (or at least more conservative that McLame!). And what happened - we ended up with the RINO because the powerful in the party thought that the RINO would draw those elusive, so-called "Independent" voters.

    And, as for Obama being elected, most people won't admit to "white guilt" being the reason they voted for Obama, but that is what got him there. (With all the hoopla over MJ's death, I think he might have been elected had he run for office.)

    Sarah Palin represents the people in "flyover country". In her we can see ourselves, people with jobs and families and mortgages and family crises and all that other stuff that average, everyday Americans deal with on a daily basis. We can relate to her and she can relate to us.

    Sarah is REAL, unlike rich, coddled politicians and their spouses such as the McCains, the Kerrys, the Obamas and the Clintons, to name a few.

    Back during the campaign, I watched one evening as two Fox News contributors (Judith Miller and Kirsten Davis) both smirked and rolled their eyes over the fact that Sarah was "always cooking", as if that were somehow odd. What do they expect a wife and mother of five children to do to feed her family - order out every day? Have "cook" prepare the meals? People who live in the beltway have no concept of the lives of regular people.

  33. I have not watched teevee since 1975. I see it at times, in the bar or at a resturaunt, and it's a shock everytime. I do like beer commercials, though.

    My mother is always watching teevee. She believes everything they say. For instance, she says Rush Limbaugh is a bad, hateful man, and a liar. She has never listened to him because that's what she thinks of him, because teevee told her to.

    When you don't see teevee as a habit, and then suddenly you watch it, everything is shocking and very offensive. I honestly feel as if I am being patronized by commercials, and the news, and the shows. It is all very dull, mediocre at best, and predictable. Sorry if I offend any teevee fans out there.

    I listen to a.m. radio. It limits the media's influence to my ears alone.

  34. I listen to talk radio on my ride home from work. Beck and Levin. Levin usually has me fired up by the time I get home.

    As for tv, I watch it in spurts. I never watch movies or sitcoms. Some days, I don't turn it on at all and just appreciate the silence after a day at work. Occasionally I'll watch Fox News, but usually not for too long as I often end up yelling at the tv.

    I LOVE to read. And depending upon my mood, I often search the net for news or interesting commentary.

    When my kids are home to visit, the tv is on most of the time and it drives me crazy. They have particular shows that they watch, every day/week, almost religiously. And movies, lots of movies. But never any kind of News show. They get the news from me, lol. They know I pay attention to what is going on.

Aside from ignoring the media, I think the greatest thing that would immediately help the country is passing a law that prohibits anyone on welfare from voting until they no longer take welfare. Also, add a line where legalized immgrants can't vote for five years (I prefer for a generation, but that won't pass).

    I think that would make a big, immediate change in politics

Personally, I'm not a fan of politicians - Reagan aside, they all tend to be HUGE disappointments. But my fiancée loves Palin, so I guess I'll just have to risk casting my lot in with her. If nothing else, I've learned that women are ALWAYS right. Take care all.

    North of the border? Which border - Canada, Mexico? Sounds like a dumb question, right? But, actually, with all the jokesters that post here, you might mean that you are in Alaska, Canada, New Zealand or you might even mean north of our border with Mexico, which means you are here in the U.S.

    Reason I'm asking - If you are Canadian (and not an American living in Canada), what do you think of YOUR country's single-payer healthcare? Enquiring minds want to know.

  48. I think that Sarah Palin stepping down from her job as Governor shows more honesty than any other politician running for President. In the past, how many of them have stepped down from their jobs as Governor, Congressman or Senator so that they could campaign? VERY FEW. Most hang on to thier jobs in case they lose. These people are being paid by the taxpayer and instead they are out on the road making campaign appearances, participating in debates, etc, etc. Look at Dennis Kucinich - how many times has he run for President? Every 4 years he takes time off from his job as Congressman to go out and campaign for a year! Who is representing his constituents while he is gone? Shame on the people who keep voting him back into office.

    During this last election - Obama, Clinton, McCain (and others)- NONE of them quit their "day jobs". They all started their campaigns at least two years before the election and spent most of their time away from Washington. Sarah Palin did not begin to participate in the campaign until August of 2008 - a scant three months before the election.

    This is not a new issue, its been like this for ages. Its time that it stopped. If you wanted to change your job, would your employer pay if you took time off to go and seek employment elsewhere? I think not.

    I don't know that El Cerdo Ignatius was using circular logic here. Instead, it sounds more like "the new honesty," which involves conservatives who criticize conservative candidates, rather than doing what the Democrats correctly do: keeping a united front, while discussing team differences privately, which is more constructive.

    The problem with ECI's logic is making the King's and BO's actions EQUIVALENT to those of other presidents, particularly conservative ones.

    True, the creation of "czars," through which positions presidents have circumvented Congress' constitutional jurisdiction, is not new to BO. Such positions should be expressly forbidden.

    Yet NO American president----Republican or Democrat----has EVER taken take the equivalent socialist actions that BO has, such as grabbing corporations, hiring and firing their CEO's, etc.

    ECI is neither honest nor helpful here.

    Thanks for the cheap shot. I was not trying to use circular logic, nor was I equating BHO with all predecessors, conservative or not. I obviously went wrong in using equivocating language, and in not singling out BHO for his incursions into the economy using czars, or his meddling in the affairs of private business. I agree that he's gone above and beyond what anyone prior has done.

    Sometimes one comments to make a point or two briefly, given the constraints of time. My point earlier was simply that Obama's thrown gas on a fire already burning, so it would seem to me that the real problem is that the President has the power to do it. You seemed to understand that premise when you said that "[s]uch positions should be expressly forbidden." Totally agree.

    And as for criticizing (nominal) conservatives from the right, what of it? Must I gather them in a room and vent my spleen privately? That's "what the Democrats do", but I think there's a world of difference between a blogger making comments here and the open bickering in the GOP these days. Don't equate me with Republicans who take public swipes at one another.

    @Bettyann: It was not circular logic, but I grant that it was too equivocating. If you knew me even vaguely, though, I doubt you would accuse me of equivocating too often, or pushing a homogenization of anyone's minds.

    @Jamie: I should have said north of the northern border of the USA. So aye, I am Canadian. You ask what I think of my country's single payer health care system - the answer is NOT MUCH.

    I have a family doctor, but many families in my area do not. Why not? There aren't enough of them. Costs the government too much money. Lots of people languish on waiting lists, and have to go to walk-in clinics, if they live in or near an urban area, or they go to the hospital for routine stuff, further clogging up the E.R.'s., which are bursting anyway because it's all "free".

    Last week, I wanted to make an appointment with my internist, who is supposed to see me annually to watch a minor chronic stomach problem and a ticky mitral valve. I haven't seen her since 2007. Last year, although promised by her secretary that I'd get a call for an appointment, it never happened. (Too busy.) Last week, I was again told I couldn't get one yet. Fine - how about in the fall? She couldn't commit to that. When could I expect a call? She didn't know. Too busy. Could I, I asked, expect to see the internist by the end of the year? Don't know. Very busy, etc.

    So I made an appointment with my GP, and asked about an echocardiogram, which I am supposed to have every two years. The 2 years will be due in March 2010. He wouldn't commit to getting me in for an echocardiogram - doctors have to be "stewards" of these "health care resources", as if he were talking about forestry or fishing. I told him that if an appointment wasn't made this summer, that a test in March 2010 wouldn't fly, because I am aware that an echocardiogram has to be booked SIX TO SEVEN MONTHS IN ADVANCE. If it's a rush job, you might get it in 2 months. If you're on your back in the E.R. due to a heart attack, you might get bumped up to the front of the line. If you're still alive on arrival, that is.

    What a crock of $!#*!%. I would gladly pay out of my own pocket to have access to a private system, where I could see an internist annually and get the tests I want to keep an eye on my heart. But believe it or not, that's against the law in Canada.

    So, my American friends, my advice is avoid, avoid, avoid. I know the US system has a cost problem, but TORT REFORM would go a long way to solving it. Don't give up - please fight to keep the gov't out. The only thing you get from gov't-run health care is rationing.

  54. Thank you for answering my question about Canadian health care. I wanted to hear it from someone. I've read about stories like yours before, but the msm over here chooses not to air those kinds of stories.

    I get a lot of information from the internet. For instance, I had read that in some towns, residents enter a lottery when the town doctor can add another patient to his patient list. If you win the lottery, you get to see the doctor. If you don't win, you have to wait until the next "vacancy". I suppose you might get to where you wish someone would die so you could have a chance to get their slot!

    I've heard nightmare stories out of Great Britain, especially about dental care.

    I agree with you, Tort Reform would go a long, long way, but I doubt that will ever be addressed - there are too many lawyers in Congress and powerful lobbyists, too.

    I won't give up and more people are hearing the message. We will just have to fight the "Obama machine".....
